About Font

The BLOCK typeface was inspired by the monumental and uniform look of the apartment blocks that characterized the cityscapes of socialist Eastern Europe. These buildings, with their repeating geometric shapes and clean lines, serve as a major influence on the font's design aesthetic.

The letterforms in the BLOCK typeface are constructed primarily using geometric shapes, reflecting the angular and modular design elements found in socialist-era architecture.

Each type weight maintains consistent stroke width and proportions, reflecting the standardized and mass-produced nature of the apartment blocks from which they are inspired.

The BLOCK font is designed in ten weights ranging from Thin to Extra Black, offering flexibility and versatility for a variety of design applications. To soften the otherwise hard look of the font and evoke a sense of accessibility, a variant with rounded corners has been added, reminiscent of the weathered edges often seen in aged concrete structures. In addition to the standard upright weights, the BLOCK font features accompanying italic styles. These italics maintain the geometric principles of upright characters while introducing a subtle slope and fluidity to the letterforms. The letterforms are built on a modular grid system allowing for easy alignment and consistency across different weights and styles.

The BLOCK font is well suited for a wide range of applications, including editorial design, branding, signage and digital interfaces. It evokes a sense of nostalgia while offering a modern interpretation of the architectural legacy of the socialist era in Eastern Europe. Whether used in print or digital media, BLOCK adds distinctive character to any design project, reflecting the visual language of the past while embracing the present.
